Shiitake: A Common Favorite

While they aren’t the eye catching beauties that Pink Oysters are, Shiitake Mushrooms have a lot to bring to the table. Their meaty, earthy flavor and meaty texture give this mushroom the ability to be eaten in a multitude of ways, either accompanying or even possibly replacing meat. Pasta and stir frys are some of the most popular ways to fix Shiitake, but they’re also great in taco salads, hamburgers, and more.

On top of being delicious, Shiitake provide several potential benefits to your health. Rich in B vitamins, but low in fat, Shiitakes are also known in many cultures for aiding with weight loss, and controlling your blood sugar and pressure levels. Is it really any surprise they’re one of the most popular of the cultivated mushrooms?

With one of the longest known shelf lives of mushrooms, Shiitakes last nearly a month when refrigerated. This is great for small-time growers, as it gives them plenty of time to get it delivered. When growing for yourself, however, you have the option to fix it up into a tasty treat immediately, so why wait? What is your favorite Shiitake recipe? Feel free to share them with us in the comments.
